The snow is beginning to melt, the temperatures are warming up, and soon you’ll be spotting a few signs that spring is on its way. With this in mind, it’s time to start thinking about taking care of your property after the cold winter season. One of the best things you can do for your Sheridan garden each spring is to protect it with mulch. JPJ Landscaping LLC would like to share three tips for mulching your bushes and plants during the spring season.

3 Tips for Mulching Your Garden Each Spring

1. Mulch in Mid or Late Spring

The best time to mulch your flower gardens, bushes, and trees is during spring, specifically mid or late spring. This is because the soil is still warming up from the cold temperatures and layers of snow left over by Old Man Winter. If you mulch too early, the soil will remain cool and won’t be able to do its job — growing healthy plants and flowers.

2. Mulch for Protection

Spring mulching is beneficial for protecting the valuable flowers and plants on your Sheridan property. Not only does mulch help control weed growth and hold in much-needed moisture, but it also keeps the soil from overheating as the weather temps begin to change. Mulching also protects your land from soil erosion by keeping the soil in place and being carried away by wind and rain.

3. When Not to Mulch

Just as it’s important to mulch flower beds and plants at the right time, it’s also important to know when you shouldn’t mulch your property. If you have plants that spread like creeping thyme or trailing vinca, avoid mulching around these plants. Their nature is to move and spread, which will disrupt the mulch and make a mess of your garden. Avoid mulching over existing weeds, too. It’s best to pull them out before you lay down mulch. If not, the mulch will do for the weeds what it does for your fragile plants and trees — keep them healthy and cause them to grow.
